Let me start off by saying that the word “healthy” should be used lightly when it comes to describing alcohol. For instance, dark liquors contain more antioxidants, but they also contain more congeners (toxic chemicals created during the fermentation process) which create hangovers. You’ve probably heard the popular belief that light beer is better for you than the brand’s regular-calorie offering. True for the most part, but most people drink more of the light beer to make up for the lower alcoholic content which is unhealthy. Considering an alcoholic beverage healthy is all about perspective. That’s why I’ve taken the time to give you some healthier options to enjoy on your next outing.
Red wine is a heart healthy drink. The antioxidants keep the blood vessels flexible and helps to prevent clotting. Studies have shown that a supplement in certain red wines can also decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels also known as bad cholesterol . High LDL levels lead to heart heart attacks. A glass or two helps to lower that risk.
White wines have slightly less calories than red wines. Instead of grabbing the Merlot for dinner try white wines such as Riesling or Pinot Grigio. The aforementioned beverages have a lower alcohol content than their other white wine counterparts, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Bloody Mary with a twist
How can a drink made with mostly tomato juice be bad for you? Well, the typical Bloody Marys are pre-bottled with tomato juice, loads of sodium and other ingredients that are detrimental to your health. Try using no sugar-added, low sodium tomato juice, one shot of vodka, fresh squeezed lemon, teaspoon of horseradish and a celery stalk to top it off.
White Sangria ReMIX
Although white sangria is mostly made with white wine, this drink is flowing with sugar, brandy and ginger ale. Shave off some of those added calories by using white wine, chopped fruit and seltzer.
Liqueurs and mixers are filled with sugar. These high calorie ingredients make margaritas a likely candidate to be ReMixed. Make your next margarita with tequila, fresh lime juice and a dash of orange liqueur.
Mimosas aren’t the worse thing to drink. Orange juice and champagne won’t do too much damage to you. However, you can decrease your calorie intake by using fresh-squeezed orange juice and using half champagne and half seltzer.
